The recent crisis of financial sector regulation that hit many Western economies is becoming an increasingly important topic of research and policy. The present study investigates whether and how corporate governance mechanisms which have been introduced to improve banks’ resilience to shocks affect the life of financial networks at different levels, namely, firm-specific and firm-network contexts. Using a unique dataset provided by the Italian Banking Authority (Authority) containing information on a total of 216.000 bank-specific, 4.6 million agent and 4.2 million client accounts and information about firms’ compliance and governance performance from 2000 to 2009, the study exploits data from the ISTAT firm-level database on Italian listed firms. Each firm has been observed at the time of its listing and at the following two waves, covering a span of more than eight years. At the firm level, compliance and governance is observed through the two variables Compliance and Governance. At the individual level, agent- and client-level accounts are measured through their wealth indicators. A firm-network analysis method is applied in order to identify contagion effects between firms. The results highlight that the introduction of governance affects the life of financial networks. Firms with better compliance are more likely to provide better quality service to their clients, through direct recommendations and better services and may have therefore stronger relationships with their clients. A stronger relationship between firms has a positive effect on their survival probability, suggesting that financial networks have a strong stabilizing effect on firms in financial distress.
