A year after New Jersey Transit chairman Anthony S.C. O’Brien stepped down as the state’s top rail official amid a series of embarrassing derailments, problems and failures, the Republican official is set to join the New Jersey Transit board of directors.
O’Brien will be joining three other people who were appointed to fill the board vacancies left when Gov. Chris Christie was forced to resign. Christie was the only state official named to the board.
The appointments — made effective this week — come at a time when Governor Phil Murphy continues the Christie-era practice of naming local residents to the commuter agency’s board in an effort to give residents a stake in the agency.
O’Brien, a former Republican state assemblyman from Hunterdon County and the ex-chairman of the powerful transportation committee in the New Jersey Senate, resigned his positions in May after the state’s largest commuter rail operator was thrust into the public eye for a series of embarrassing problems and failures.
