by gm scoreboard, inc. – home > hobby scoreboard, llc. contact us for free shipping.. wholesale brackets & saddles packages. fri, 15 jun 2009 00:42:20 +0000http://www.ironsundesign.com/index.php?eid=1833&page=1in the aftermath of last week’s shooting in aurora, colo., where 12 people died and 58 were wounded, there were calls to ban violent video games, internet games, guns and even children from playing with nerf guns. there were calls to blame the media, the hollywood effect and to install armed guards in schools. none of the calls came up with any great velocity, though the media certainly pounced on it all. the problems with the calls were two-fold: first, the speed with which people were jumping to blame video games was very similar to the speed they were jumping to blame guns. second, the majority of those making the calls were members of the anti-gun, anti-gun-violence lobby. in other words, it wasn’t a very scientific or well-considered movement. it was, though, a very, very emotional one, and the emotion was winning. so let’s unpack this. the first item i’ll tackle is the shock and confusion that people felt when they saw the number of fatalities. as shocking as it was to see the number of deaths, the other aspect that was shocking was the number of people who were injured. fifty-eight people were wounded. now, this is what any parent would call unthinkable. but if you’re a parent that is, the question you should be asking isn’t “how many people should die in the game of nerf?” it’s “how can we ensure that this never happens again?” the answer is not enough to ban the game, or the nerf gun, or nerf guns. the answer is not to restrict the sale of nerf guns. the answer is to take away the access to guns from people who are dangerous, or, better yet, to take away the access to guns from those who are insane. if we really want to talk about a video game solution, we need to figure out how we can enact laws that allow trained experts and the police to identify those who present as dangerous to others. we need to allow them to detain them. we need to prosecute them, and we need to follow them, or find them if they run, wherever they go. and we need to do it now. we don’t need to “prevent them from entering a school.” that won’t keep them out of the school, or stop them from attacking people at the school. i’ve seen it all before. just like video games, this is not the first time. all of the people in that movie theater in aurora knew the killer was coming to the theater. they knew him. they knew him well enough to know that when he walked in, he was ready to shoot. all of them knew, should they be prosecuted and convicted, they would spend the rest of their lives in prison. what makes you think that we can do any better than the laws that we already have? better video games, and guns? yes, perhaps we need to ban the sale of guns. we should ban the sale of nerf guns. maybe we need to allow teachers to have firearms in schools.
